Childlike Faith

I used to be a nanny for a very dear family, and since working full-time with Campus Crusade I have transitioned to the occasional babysitter. If I had it my way, I would spend so much more time with Eva. She is the sweetest little three year-old and always brightens my day. She gives me life and I find myself having more compassion and life after spending time with her. So, needless to say that when her parents ask me to watch her, it is a pure joy to accept the offer.

Even though my morning began at 4:30am, Eva was well worth it today. I did my devotions, woke her up, got her dressed and out the door. As I was trying to get her to leave the house, she kept gathering her toys and other items she wanted to bring into the car. I only allowed her to bring two; she chose her "talking" baby and her feathery purse (it is so covered by large feathers, at first glance you can't even tell what it is).

In the car, she kept looking at me with that big gleaming face of hers, and every time I would acknowledge her glances, she would liberate loud giggles that erupted from the deepest parts of her tiny body and swing her purse wildly over her head.  And all I could do was just smile, smile big. Here's how the conversation evolved:

Eva showing off her feathery purse
Amie: Eva, do you have anything in your purse?
Eva: Ohs my goodness. Lots.
Amie: Oh yeah? What do you have in there?
Eva: I dunno.
Amie: You just said you have a lot in there...
Eva combs away the feathers and looks inside
Eva: I had stuff in heres, but Mommy made me take it owt, so its doesn't gets lost.
Amie: Maybe you can put more stuff in it later.
Eva: Yeah. Matter of factly states: Maybe Jesus will fill my purse with stuff.

Yes, Eva. We all wish that Jesus would fill our purses with stuff. But instead of writing it off as a cute phrase form the mouth of a babe, it hit me as profound. How often do we walk around with empty "purses" in life, whether they be jobs, relationships, ambitions, etc... and feel the need to fill them ourselves? Well, maybe Jesus has something really great that He wants to fill your purse with today, and he's just waiting for you to ask Him. I dare you. Ask Jesus to fill your "purse" today and see what happens. Don't feel like you need to fill your job, relationships, and ambitions yourself. All you have to do is ask, and you shall receive. If I could have childlike faith, like Eva does, and think to ask Jesus for even the simplest things, life would somehow seem easier.

Jesus, fill our purses today with "great stuff."

  1. That is the cutest blasted purse I have ever seen! And it's true what they say about "out of the mouths of babes." Great post. LYBTI
